Moon Base 99 | Meteor Showers and Hidden Artifacts
Another devlog to keep track of what I'm doing.
I added meteor showers to the game. Right now they can happen depending on how many times the rocket has landed. The meteors are spawned randomly in a square area over the base. A meteor is just a node with a particle node attached so it leaves a trail. When the meteor hits the ground I have a second particle node that emits in the opposite direction explosively. When a meteor hits a astronaut their oxygen goes to zero and they are killed. If a meteor hits a computer it is broken until it is repaired by an astronaut. This takes 10 seconds right now but I was thinking maybe another minigame for fixing broken things.
I also added a "anomaly detector". If you buy it with science from the store, each astronaut is equipped with a scanner they can use. The scanner brings up a display of 2 sine waves on top of each other. The closer the astronaut gets to a hidden artifact, the more the wave forms match. Once directly over the hidden object you can hit a button and gain 100 science. I got the idea brainstorming with GPT4 for a mini game. I put the whole thing together but chatGPT did the math part for making a sin wave out of a line. I'm hoping this task will take the players eyes off the base, and allow bad things to happen.
The drill upgrade does not do anything right now and I'm just waiting for an idea to come to me. At first I was thinking it could be used to repair computers, but if a meteor shower happens before you have enough science for a drill, it would be game over. Maybe the drill could be used to fix the rover if it is hit by a meteorite. I'm undecided so it will remain not functional.
Testing the game has been difficult because it takes time for the base to get going before random things can happen, like murder. So far I think the rate at witch astronauts go insane is good. A few times testing an astronaut went insane and immediately killed some one. It's pretty great when it happens naturally. I'll have to keep testing and see what feels right.
I added some place holder music I made a few years ago. It sort of fits the space theme, but can get old after the third loop. So I added a mute button for the music mostly for me. I have some one working on the music but I need something now, because silence is no good.
If any one wants to help me test it. You can try it here:
